Critique-EEHN Seminar: Enjoying Climate Change – 12th Nov

For this joint CRITIQUE and Edinburgh Environmental Humanities Network reading group, we’ll be discussing Lucas Pohl and Erik Swyngedouw’s short paper, ‘Enjoying Climate Change: Jouissance as a Political Factor’. Drawing on Lacanian psychoanalysis, the paper considers how enjoyment shapes people’s responses to climate change, including a psychic attachment to environmentally destructive ways of life, and the pleasures and fantasies associated with environmentalism itself. Our plan is to use the paper as a starting point for thinking through these themes critically together.
Time: 3:30pm – 5pm, Thursday 12th November 2026
Location: Appleton Tower room 8.02
