CRITIQUE-PTRG Seminar Anticolonial Solidarity: History, Theory, Practice – 3 May 2023, 3 pm
CRITIQUE -PTRG Seminar (pre-read) with by Jared Holley (PIR, Edinburgh).
This paper aims to critically reorient us to the received ways of thinking about solidarity today. Recent theoretical discussions of solidarity struggle to account for colonized peoples’ international calls to solidarity. While these theories capture some aspects of actual practices of solidarity, they obscure others that are especially prominent in anticolonial movements. As such, I argue that turning to the global history of anticolonial solidarity helps avoid these limits. Surveying the history of anticolonial transnationalism reveals both the limits of hegemonic accounts of solidarity and a range of ways of placing anticolonialism at the core of our understandings of solidarity.
