Anna Bernard (KCL) – Poetry and Solidarity – CRITIQUE Lecture, Thursday 31st October 3-4:30pm

Poster with the text: support the mass struggle against Apartheid in South Africa

This talk is taken from Prof Bernard‘s book-in-progress, International Solidarity and Culture in Late Cold War Britain. The book addresses a neglected archive of literature and film from and about the Nicaraguan, South African, and Palestinian national liberation movements that was circulated internationally from 1975 to 1990. It situates this work in relation to the record of British solidarity with these movements in organizational archives and left periodicals, exploring the traces of its publication, promotion, and reception in activist networks alongside comparative close readings of individual works. The talk focuses on the role of the poetry anthology as the key form through which British readers could gain access to the poetry of these movements, and as a form that foregrounds solidarity as a relation through its pedagogical framing and assumption of ‘external’ readership.
